3/18/2007 - The Secondary Cage Part III: It all comes together! (B)
Previous Entry
Next Entry
Secondary Cage construction continues. The final preparation of the rings for assembly is completed and a jig is made to drill the spider mount holes in the struts. Remember, the most important aspect of the Secondary Cage is that it is as light as possible. Aluminum struts, a thin but strong focuser board, plywood rings, and a lightweight kydex light baffle won't amount to much more then 12 lbs when complete.

Here are the rings with all strut seats and upper pole clamp clamp holes drilled.
Using the full-size CAD drawing, my brother created a quick jig to slide each strut into for locating the secondary spider mounting holes. This jig gaurantees the holes are located in the same place on all struts.

The rings have had an inset routered out to accept and secure the ends of the curved focuser board.
